Finally we got a some winter-like weather, with soft snow and freezing temperatures. Both are crucial when trying to spot the otters in river Vantaa. Even now after having around -10 celsius for a week or so, the river runs almost free. The rapids parts are open, but where flow is slower, ice has covered the scenery. Otters are on the go all the time, and because they need open water for fishing, they might travel long distances. Foot prints on the snow are the only way to tell if they are around, and after seeing and photographing them is based on pure luck. Of course you can help luck by spending as much time as possible by the river. Just waiting and waiting for them to appear. Fresh air, Thermos coffee and trying to keep warm, while not moving too much -those are the ingredients for a a good otter day. And then if you see something, that’s a bonus! We have now been very lucky two days in a row, got otters and extrabonus a red fox! 🙂 It seems that we have a otter mom and two cubs. A pitty that I didnt manage to see who did catch that fish the other cubs is eating.

Vihdoinkin kelit muuttui talvisemmiksi, pakkasta ja pehmeää lunta. Näitä molempia ehdottomasti tarvitaan silloin kun haluaa nähdä saukkoja Vantaanjoessa. Joki on edelleen lähes vapaa, vaikka mukavia pakkasia on jatkunut jo jonkin aikaa. Koskipaikat ovat kokonaan avoinna, mutta suvannot ovat saaneet jääkannen, jonka päällä on pakkaslunta. Koska saukko tarvitsee sulaa vettä ne kulkevat pitkiäkin matkoja jokivarsia ja valtaojia. Tuoreet assunjäljet lumessa ovatkin ainut tapa löytää paikka jossa ovat olleet hiljattain,  sen jälkeen niiden näkeminen ja valokuvaaminen on vain tuurista kiinni. Onnea voi toki auttaa viettämällä paljon aikaa jokivarressa: raitista ilmaa, termoskaffetta, ja yrittäen pysyä lämpimänä, mahdollisimman paikallaan ollen; siinä ainekset loistavaan saukkoväijypäivään. Ja sitten kun vielä onnistuu saukon näkemään niin se on bonusta! Nyt meillä on ollut pari peräkkäistä hyväm tuurin päivää; eilen vielä mukava yllätys ja extrabonus: ketturepolainen! 🙂 Vaikuttaa siltä, että meillä on emo ja kaksi pentua. Harmi vain kun en päässyt näkemään kuka tuon kalan sai jonka toinen pentu söi.
