I made a quick trip to Ylläs, Lapland with my dad. He is keen on cross country skiing, while I rather go on foot in the wilderness. Winter is slowly but steady arriving in Lapland and there was some 20-30 cm of snow, so it is a bit tough to wander around. Then I remembered that I had read about a company called Ylläksen Yöpuu and their photography hide service. A week before our journey I contacted Yöpuu’s Vesa by e-mail, and to my pleasant surprise he replied to me immediately (in 10 minutes, really!) telling that they do have availability for next Friday. So I was able to rent an eagle photography hide just for myself for a whole day. Most importantly they also offered transfer to and from the hide. Vesa in running this hide business together with his buddy Reino, who promised to pick me up from Ylläsjärvi side of the resort. So I packed camera pack with all the gear and was ready to meet the eagles. 

It was maybe 40 min drive in very dark and foggy morning, the road kept getting more and narrow and then finally we were close to the hide. I gabbed my back pack and Reino took a plastic pack which contained a dead fox. ( fox was hunted in the Northern part of Lapland because of a nature conservation project that is trying to save and revive very rare arctic fox in Finnish Lapland ) It was only 400m walk to the hide, first we placed the fox in front of the hide, next to old moose remaining . Then it was time to settle in the hide and make myself comfortable. And that wasnt hard at all 🙂 . There is a heater, great and comfortable chairs, large windows and excellent places for cameras and lenses. In one shooting hole I placed Canon 5d3 attached with canon 400mm/f4DO and in other Canon 7d2 with 70-200mm/f2.8. Then I switched off the lights and started to wait the daylight. Around 8:20am the first ravens arrived, but they just sat on the branches, waiting and daylight slowly increasing.  And then precisely at 10 am the first eagle arrived. S/he came out of nowhere and I must say I just stared it a few moments before I even remembered that I do have cameras at hand. Eagle then dropped down for food and landed straight on the fox. I had already focused on the fox so that I would not need to move the lens but those wings spread open were too large and close to 400mm to fit in the frame. But then he started feeding on the fox, but all the time very alert looking around.

I think that I was very lucky with the eagles, because if I had so-called-light-for shooting,say, 7 hours, the eagle/s were at sight at least 5 hours. If not feeding, but then sitting on the tree tops ofr trunks close to the hide. In the afternoon one eagle screamed a few times and after a minute an other eagle showed up. Obviously they are a couple living their territory. Once they both approached the carrion, and I hoped to get images of two eagles eating, but only the other landed and other continued to tree top. Probably he was on guarding while she had her meal- dont know.

It is surprising how quickly time goes there, just looking out of the window or through the lens, but soon I noticed the evening and total darkness is about to take hold of the scenery. Then it was time for me to eat my picnic and enjoy the last drop of coffee i had left. And soon Reino called me telling that he is around the corner to pick me up.
All in all this was a truly awesome experience, and I think that whether photographer or not, it really is worth the visit if you happen to be around Ylläs. Also the service that Vesa and Reino provided was first-class, helpful and friendly.

KUVAGALLERIAAN TUOSTA YLÄPUOLELTA KLIKKAAMALLA

Kävin pikakeikalla pitkän viikonlopun isän kanssa Ylläksellä. Kyllä se talvi saapuu Lappiinkin ja maastossa oli yllättävänkin paljon lunta, ehkä sellaiset 20-30cm. Faija hiihtelee mieluusti, mutta itse kuljeksin mieluummin jalkaisin, mutta nyt lumenmäärä alkoi olla jalkamiestä rajoittava tekijä. Sitten muistin, että olin kuullut yrityksestä nimeltään Ylläksen Yöpuu ja heidän kotkakuvauskojustaan. Reissua edeltävällä viikolla laitoin heille sähköpostin johon Yöpuun isäntä Vesa vastasikin aivan samantien, että kyllä; tilaa toivomalleni päivälle on. Ja ennen kaikkea myös kuljetus Ylläsjärven puolelta onnistuu, olimme isän kanssa juna-bussi yhdistelmällä liikenteessä. Näin huomasin varanneeni kokonaan itselleni kotkakojun päiväksi!  Kuvauskojupisnes on Vesan ja yhtiökumppaninsa Reinon yhdessä puuhaama, ja niinpä sumuisena perjantaiaamuna pakkasin kamerat reppuun eväiden seuraksi ja hyppäsin Reinon kyytiin. Ajoa kertyi reilu puolisen tuntia, tie vain kapeni kapenemistaan ja lopulta loppui kokonaan. Reppu selkään ja Reino nappasi muovipussin, jonka sisällöksi kojulla paljastui kuollut kettu.  (Pohjois-Lapissa kettua metsästetään, jotta naalille tulisi mahdollisuus palata vakiasukkaaksi) Kelkan jälkeä kulkimme otsalamppujen valossa noin 400m kojulle. Nakkasimme ketun kojun eteen hirvenhaaskan viereen ja sitten kojuun. Taloksi käynti oli helppoa, nopeaa  ja mukavaa: kojussa on lämmitin, hyvät isot ikkunat ja mukavat tuolit, ja ennen kaikkea erinomaiset kuvausaukot ja pöydät. Canon 5D3:n kaveriksi valitsin Canon 400/f4DO:n ja ja Canon 7D2:n sai 70-200/f2.8:n  Reino toivotti lykkyä tykö ja lähti päivätöihinsä.

 Sitten vain valot pois ja odottamaan päivän sarastusta.
Pimeys vaihtui hitaasti harmauteen ja 8:20 saapuivat ensimmäiset korpit, jotka tyytyivät vain istuksimaan oksilla kauempana tarkkaillen. Sitten tasan kymmeneltä saapui jostain ensimmäinen kotka. Ensikertalaiselle linnun suuruus teki todellisen vaikutuksen ja kesti hetken ennen kuin edes älysin, että minullahan olisi kamerakin käsissä. Olin tarkentanut ennakkoon kettuun jottein tarvitse suotta linssiä kääntää, mutta siivet levällään laskeutuessan eihän se mokoma mahtunut kokonaan 4-sataamillisen ruutuun.  Asettui ruokailemaan, mutta hyvin tarkkaili ympäristöään koko ajan, sulkimen sarjatuliäänestä ei kyllä ollut moksiskaan 😉

Minulla oli hyvä tuuri, sillä ns valoisasta noin 7:stä tunnista jota kuvaamiseen oli käytössä, varmasti noin 5 kotka/t olivat näkösällä. Joko syömässä ja ainakin istumassa aukion reunapuissa. Homma on kojussa on huomattavan paljon mielekkäämpää kun voi kiikareilla tarkkailla kohdetta kuvaamisen lomassa. Ja korpit pitivät kyllä seuraa haaskalla jos kotkat hetkeksi poistuivat. Iltapäivällä toinen kotka kiljui 10-15 sekuntia ja siitä ehkä minuutin kuluttua saapui toinen paikalle. Istuivat kuin kyyhkyset rinnakkain kelon oksalla. Kerran lähtivät yhdessä lentoon kohti haaskaan, mutta vain toinen laskeutui syömään, toinen jatkoi vartioimaan puunlatvaan.

Oikeastaan yllättävää kuinka nopeasti aika kului, yht’äkkiä huomasin, että pimeys nielaisi tienoon ja kuvaaminen oli mahdotonta, tosin kotkatkin lähtivät viimeisten valonrippeiden matkaan. Oli siis aika syödä loput eväät ja tyhjentää termospullosta kahvintippa, ja sitten Reino jo soittelekin olevansa tulossa. 

Todella hieno kokemus jota voin lämpimästi suositella harrasti sitten valokuvausta tai ei. Jos yhtään luonnosta ja eläimistä on kiinnostunut niin kyllä näiden uljaiden lintujen tarkkailu ja/tai kuvaus näin läheltä (15-20 metriä) on vaivan väärti. Myös aivan upeasti Vesa ja Reino pitivät vieraastaan huolta. Tänne on päästävä joskus uudelleen!
