We are having a really good winter what comes to seeing and finding otters! It is unbelievable that only a week later from the previous sighting, we found an otter again.  And not only found, but also were able to follow s/he having party and eating a large fish.  The river rapids are more or less covered with ice floes which are collapsed due the drop of the water level. Here and there the river is running free in between these ice floes. I went searching step by step, looking carefully the water, the ice floes and the bends to find even some foot prints of the otters.
Suddenly I saw some old marks in the snow and stopped to see in which direction he had went. Just behind these footprints I noticed him lying on the floes and biting a fish which was kicking.  Obviously he had just catch it and was having the first bites. We had the first row ‘seats’ for the show, otter in front of us 10-15 m away! He didnt pay any attention to us: just ate and rest on the ice. What an extreme luck it was; if I would have taken 5 more steps forward, the otter would had disappeared behind the ice. So he was only visible to literally to that spot from where the images are taken 🙂  

Meillä on ollut käsittämätön tuuri saukkojen suhteen tänä talvena. Vain viikko edellisestä kohtaamisesta ja tapasimme taas. Nukarinkoskessa on suuria jäälauttoja jotka ovat vedenpinnan laskun vuoksi pudonneet tai kaatuneet, ja siellä täällä vesi juoksee vapaana näiden lauttojen välissä ja päällä. Kuljimme hiljalleen joen rantoja pitkin etsien lumijälkiä ja niistä vinkkiä mihin suuntaan ovat kulkeneet. Eräässä joenmutkassa huomasin vanhat jäljet joita jäin katselemaan ja tuumailemaan. Yhtäkkiä huomasin, että lumipeitteisen kiven takana olevalla jäänreunalla makoilee saukko jolla on iso, vielä potkiva kirjolohi kynsissään. Meillä oli todelliset eturivin paikat: saukko kalan kanssa 10-15 metrin päässä, ja onneksemme se ei välittänyt meistä vähääkään. Aivan mieletön tsäkä, jos olisin kävellyt vielä 5 askelta eteenpäin olisi koko kaveri jäänyt jään ja lumen taakse piiloon. Otus oli siis kirjaimellisesti näkyvissä vain noilta jalansijoilta joilta kuvat on otettu. 🙂
